The MAC

The MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre) is a cultural hub that since opening in 2012, offers a programme including visual art, theatre, dance and family workshops. The MAC was designed by Hackett Hall McKnight who won the commission following a competition to build on the site.¹

Designed by Irish architects Hackett Hall McKnight (now Hall McKnight), the Metropolitan Arts Centre is wedged between two existing buildings on a hemmed-in corner plot that sits beside the city cathedral. The main spaces of the building are the foyer and cafe bar, 2 auditoria, 1000m2 of gallery and dance studios. ²

The Permanent Present is the MAC’s only permanent artwork, a major sculptural work by Irish artist Mark Garry commissioned by The Thomas Devlin Fund and the MAC. The sculpture consists of 400 metal wires in the main foyer of the MAC, creating a spectrum of colour that travels through the space akin to a beam of light refracting and reflecting. The installation reflects The Thomas Devlin Fund’s commitment to highlighting the futility of violence as well as the hopes and aspirations of the young people.
