Hidden behind high stone walls and under the rafters of a pitched roof in the heart of Dublin city, is the unsung gem which is D-Light Studios; a vast, versatile, vibrant multi-purpose studio space, encased within a post-industrial warehouse.

D-Light Studios is dedicated to developing and facilitating creativity in all its forms, to empowering its local community to embrace and engage in creative practice, and to offering a home for a variety of artists and creative professionals – micro enterprises operating in the creative industries.

Beyond the in-house community who call the space home, are a range of large, open-plan studios, that provide a unique, blank canvas and industrial backdrop, ideal for creative activities, and available for short-term rental. 1

History

“Opened by celebrated photographer Agata Stoinska back in 2008, D-Light Studios has grown from a dream to reality – as a space where creativity flourishes and is supported. Our dedicated and committed team comprises creative practitioners and professionals, expert in meeting our clients needs, ensuring their time with us results in exceptional and memorable experiences which deliver unique, creative outputs.

Our clients choose us as an internal landscape for photography, film, advertising, brand augmentation, creative programme development, events and more.

Celebrated creative programmes and activities which have inspired audiences include the D-Light Studios Residency Award which has been running since 2017 and has supported socially engaged artists and creatives in the development of their practice with free dedicated studio space, materials grant and more, Flora / Fauna Project – a north-inner-city centered contemporary dance platform that invites participation between professional and non-professional dancers and promotes international dance artists through performance and film.

D-Light Studios is home to a variety of creative enterprises including award-winning publication BLOW Photo which has inspired audiences and offered opportunities that support emerging photography talent.

Located in the heart of North Inner City Dublin and built 150 years ago, the building originally functioned as a wool merchants and tenement, some years later it was used as a stables and mail cart contractors, then in the late 1900’s it became a mechanics garage (hence the car ramp into Studio A!).

In the early 2000’s, the building was due to be demolished and apartments were to be built in its place, due to the recession these plans did not come to fruition.

Over the years no restorations were made to protect the structure or roof. In 2008 Agata Stoinska discovered the building, it was refurbished, re-purposed and D-Light Studios was born. The initial refurbishing works were possible thanks to a Dublin City Enterprise Board grant.

Since then the studio has been re-fitted further to increase comfort of work and to create more hire spaces and on an ongoing basis all revenue from studio hire is reinvested into the building to continue to develop and improve facilities.” 2
