During his two days in Ireland for the World Meeting of Families in August of 2018, Pope Francis made three public appearances, culminating in a mass in Phoenix Park. In stark contrast to the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul II, which attracted an estimated 2.5 million spectators (75% of the country’s population at the time), Pope Francis was met with less than 152,000 total attendees. Hugh Quigley’s work examines the uniquely personal experience of some of those in attendance at the Phoenix Park mass, each with their own hopes for and perception of both the visit and the future of the Catholic church as a fixture in Ireland’s national identity. 1

About the Artist

A Dublin-based freelance documentary photographer and photojournalist, Hugh Quigley grew up in rural Tipperary, spending much of his time outdoors in the Golden Vale around his home. Hugh’s work focuses on humanity’s attempts to control, utilize and co-exist with the natural world -with a general interest in biodiversity and ethnography. His self-published photobook, Laws of the Leash, generated critical interest for its thoughtful and sensitive portrayal of the controversial sport of coursing, which involves the capture of wild hares for use in Greyhound racing. 2

About the Series
TLP Editions are an ongoing collection of contemporary photographic projects in the form of accessible and inexpensive publications by PhotoIreland.
