Self Storage is a photobook by Fiona Hackett that depicts a variety of storage units around Ireland and the people who use them. It includes many portraits of the users of storage spaces and is accompanied by their stories of space. Hackett’s is manifested in the thinking of Yi Fu Tuan, who she quotes in her introduction – ‘Yi Fu Tuan’s claim that ‘space is security and space is freedom…’ is embodied in the self-storage spaces on the peripheries of cities and towns. These spaces which store material possessions reflect who we are and how we now live in our contemporary world. Through photographs and stories Self Storage documents these spaces and the life experiences which bring people into them, catering for, amongst others, the ‘tourists and vagabonds’ (Zygmunt Bauman) of global mobility and offering a solution to consumer society and the ‘in-between-ness’ of the times we find ourselves in.’
